A CORONAVIRUS EASTER

At Christmas and Easter, our home traditions are celebrated with family especially at the table.

The marathon during the Easter period, starts with dinner on Holy Thursday, usually with stuffed artichokes and a pot of mussels and clams.

Lamb stew
Braised peas
and finally a delicious Easter dinner. In short, these days there is nothing more than food. However, after all the liturgies to honor the sacred Resurrection, we sit at the table to consume delicious dishes that are made even better thanks to the company of loved ones.

Thanks to the 'silent enemy' coronavirus, we are going to have to change things up a bit this year.  Because that's life right now.  But despite the pandemic, celebrating Christ's death and Resurrection are still on the agenda. With social distancing, including stay-at-home orders and self-isolation, we will be observing Easter church services virtually.

There's been a lot of adjustment for everyone over the past few weeks.  And while we might be a little bit sad that we cannot celebrate Easter weekend in person with our loved ones, we encouraged our family to embrace the new.  Because what we are celebrating is the same, regardless of how we celebrate.

We may not share a table with loved ones this Easter weekend but we can surely share our traditional Easter desserts.

And we're quite sure … this Easter will be one to remember.

  1. Hello Elisa,
Best wishes to you and yours for a Happy Easter. Thank you for posting these dishes. They brought back many fond memories to me. In your Italian tradition, what do you call the Easter Pie — ours is usually called pizzaguine (?) but looking for real name and proper spelling. It is sometimes called pizza rustica. The New York Times in their Cooking section has a very similar recipe called Easter Pie. It looks very much like ours but our recipe is more elaborate. Any help you can give about names will be appreciated. Shirley and I got to see the Pope during most of the Triduum, the Holy Saturday Mass was especially good to watch. Again, all the best for Easter. Be well, stay safe. S&S

    1. Hello Sam,
Thank you for commenting. The Easter Pie is called Pizza Chiena (Neapolitan dialect) or Pizza Piena also known as Pizza Rustica. It's not our traditional dessert for Easter. Our 'Fiadone' consists of simply a mixture of eggs and Parmigiano Reggiano (Mario's favorite). We find the pizza chiena too rich and salty....not healthy at our age. Wishing you and yours a Happy Easter!
